Treatment Journey

About Cancer > Treatment Journey

In-Hospital Care

Spending time in the hospital can feel overwhelming, but it’s an important part of many children’s cancer treatment journeys. Whether your are here for surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation, knowing what to expect can make the experience less stressful and more manageable.

During a hospital stay, families will get to know the daily routines like meal times, visiting hours, and rest periods, as well as the caring team of doctors, nurses, and specialists who are there to support your child. You may also hear about common procedures such as blood tests, scans, or medicine through an IV.

Preparing for Treatment

Before Your First Session

Getting ready for treatment involves understanding key information and practical steps. This includes what to ask your medical team, pre-treatment preparations, and emotional readiness.

  • Understand the basics: Ask your doctor to explain the treatment plan in simple terms. What is the goal? How long will it last?
  • Prepare your questions: Write down any questions you have beforehand so you don’t forget anything during appointments.
  • Organize documents: Keep all medical reports, prescriptions, and contact numbers in one accessible place.
  • Talk to your child: Depending on their age, explain what will happen in a gentle, reassuring way to reduce anxiety.
  • Plan for support: Identify family or friends who can help with childcare, meals, or transportation.

Knowing what to expect during treatment sessions can help you immensely. This covers the environment, the general flow of a session, and what to look for.

  • Routine and environment: Understand the typical schedule, who you’ll meet (doctors, nurses), and where treatments take place (e.g., dedicated children’s wards).
  • Monitoring and comfort: Vital signs will be closely watched. Comfort measures, like warm blankets or distractions, are often available.
  • Be present: If possible, be with your child during treatment to offer comfort and reassurance.
  • Ask questions during: Don’t hesitate to ask nurses or doctors about anything you don’t understand during the session.

Treatments can cause side effects, but many can be managed. Learning how to anticipate and address them is key to your comfort.

  • Know common side effects: Your doctor will discuss what to expect (e.g., nausea, fatigue, changes in appetite).
  • Ask for relief strategies: Discuss medication or non-medication methods (like specific foods, rest) to ease discomfort.
  • Keep a diary: Note down any side effects, when they occur, and what helps, to share with your medical team.
  • Maintain hydration and nutrition: Encourage fluids and small, frequent meals as advised by the doctors or dietitians.

The time between treatments is crucial for recovery and maintaining well-being. Good home care can significantly aid your child’s strength.

  • Follow instructions: Adhere strictly to medication schedules and care instructions from your medical team.
  • Prioritize rest: Ensure your child gets plenty of rest.
  • Prevent infection: Practice strict hand hygiene, avoid crowded places, and be mindful of visitors.
  • Comfort measures: Create a soothing home environment with favorite toys, books, or gentle activities.
  • Observe changes: Pay attention to any new symptoms or changes in your child’s condition.

Knowing when to seek immediate medical advice is essential for your child’s safety.

  • Fever: A fever can be a serious sign of infection in a child undergoing cancer treatment.
  • New or worsening pain: Unexplained or severe pain should always be reported.
  • Severe vomiting or diarrhea: These can lead to dehydration.
  • Breathing difficulties: Any changes in breathing should be addressed immediately.
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising: Report any unexpected bleeding from the nose, gums, or skin.
  • Lethargy or extreme weakness: If your child is unusually unresponsive or weak
